Alexia means not able to read, and agraphia not able to write. Alexia without agraphia is a particular type of blindness when patient is unable to read words, but can understand when spoken, and write them. It is a frustrating condition as patient is able to speak, and write, but cannot read even his own writing.

What exactly is the problem in alexia without agraphia?

Cause of alexia without agraphia is an abnormality of left occipital or posterior part of brain, with damage to corpus callosum (the connection or the bridge between two hemispheres of brain). Damage to the left occipital cortex takes away its ability to interpret words, while the right side of brain is unavailable due to damage to the bridge between the hemispheres.

 

What are common causes of alexia without agraphia?

Common causes are stroke and cancer.

 

How is alexia without agraphia treated?

There is no specific treatment, other than treatment of the cause.

 

What should one do if someone has alexia without agraphia?

If it has just happened, the first thing to make sure is that it is not due to a stroke. So, in acute setting, call 911 or go to emergency room ASAP for further evaluation. If it is a chronic condition, make an appointment to see a neurologist.
