This is a type of blindness when patient is not able to perceive images, in spite of having no problem with eyes or optic nerves. So the patient can see the images but not perceive it. It is a type of cortical blindness, or brain blindness.
What are symptoms of Anton Syndrome?
In this condition patient has profound blindness from defect on both sides of brain that manages visual signals, the posterior parts of brain or the occipital lobes. It is not that patient cannot see, eyes may be normal seeing everything, but the brain is unable to perceive it (analyze and make sense of an image). A patient with this syndrome is usually oblivious to his loss, and may deny or confabulate when challenged. This phenomenon of lack of awareness of this defect is called anosognosia.
What causes Anton Syndrome?
Usual causes of Anton syndrome are stroke, very low (hypoxic injury) or very high (PRES) blood pressure, affecting the back of the brain on both sides.
What is the treatment of Anton Syndrome?
There is no known specific treatment, other than treatment of the cause. Proper education and counseling of the patient and family is recommended.
How is Anton Syndrome diagnosed?
Its remarkable clinical features described above help to diagnose it. As far as the cause of Anton Syndrome, an MRI or CT scan of brain is needed to define its specific reason.
What is the prognosis of Anton Syndrome?
The defect improves in days to months, but not completely. The patient may mange to navigate in familiar surrounding, like home, but is unable to undertake any complex activity, such as driving. Usually, patient is unable to continue employment activities.
