What is a cough headache?
This type of headache is brought on by coughing, sneezing, laughing or similar activities. It is typically a short duration headache, usually lasting for seconds to minutes, but mostly seconds.
What is the cause of cough headache?
In most patients, no cause is detected. Lesion in the back part of the brain (the posterior fossa) may cause this type of headache. Known causes include Arnold-Chiari malformation, a tumor, or low spinal fluid pressure syndrome. Patients with a lesion causing this problem, usually have more severe headache, mostly in the back of head. They may also have other brainstem symptoms.
How common is cough headache?
About 1% of people have this type of headache, which makes it reasonably common. It is more common in elderly and in women.
How is cough headache diagnosed?
It is diagnosed based upon its typical symptoms and lack of any clinical signs.
How is cough headache treated?
Not every patient requires a medicine. Most need reassurance and explanation. If needed, as needed Indomethacin can help. Other medicines used to treat this condition are acetazolamide, propranolol, and topiramate.
