What is primary exercise headache?

This is a headache that typically comes on with exercise, looks like a migraine but not exactly, and usually does not last too long. The word primary implies that there is no known structural cause of this headache.

What is the cause of primary exercise headache?

Exact cause is unknown, but it is assumed to be exercise induced high pressure in the venous drainage of brain resulting in high CSF pressure.

 

What are the symptoms of primary exercise headache?

Typically, it causes a whole head pain, throbbing in nature, not associated with other migraine symptoms. It may last for a few minutes to a day or two.

 

How is the diagnosis of primary headache syndrome made?

With its typical history, other causes of headache that may cause increased pressure in the head are ruled out. Imaging of brain and especially its vessels is usually required to rule out many other causes that may present with type of headache. Many systemic medical conditions may also present in this manner, such as very high blood pressure, pheochromocytoma, angina or heart disease.

 

How is the primary headache syndrome treated?

If treatment is needed, Indomethacin may help. Beta blockers may also be effective.
