The Exploding Head Syndrome

This is a condition when a patient wakes up feeling an explosion happening in the head, which is only a perception of explosion without any physical pain, or structural damage.

What are the symptoms of the exploding head syndrome?

Main symptom is a perception of loud explosion or noise waking the patient up, which may result in anxiety and panic, but without any real noise or any lingering pain.

 

What is the cause of the exploding head syndrome?

Exact cause is unknown. It is considered a sleep disorder, or a parasomnia. It seems to happen more at the time of transition from wakefulness to sleep.

 

How is the exploding head syndrome diagnosed?

It is diagnosed by its peculiar presentation. Testing is not required.

 

How is the exploding head syndrome treated?

Most patients do not need any medicine, they need education and reassurance. If needed, a dose of clomipramine can be tried.
