Charles Bonnet Syndrome

November 27, 2020 Conditions of Eyes and Vision No Comments

This is the name of a condition when an otherwise blind person, perceive something that is not there, i.e., hallucinations. Hallucinations are usually vivid and frequently make the patient uncomfortable. Hallucinations of this syndrome are still “benign,” compared to a patient with psychosis. Patients may see people, animals, or objects like buildings or flowers.

Where is the problem in Charles Bonnet Syndrome?

Patients with this syndrome are blind and do not have visual sensory input. Functional MRI studies have revealed activity in the back of brain where images are analyzed.

What is the cause of Charles Bonnet Syndrome?

Exact reasons are unknown. It is not clear why some patients with blindness have this phenomenon and most do not.

What is the treatment for Charles Bonnet Syndrome?

Most patients need reassurance and education. Rarely, patients are distraught and ask for a treatment. One of my patients did well with gabapentin.
