Spatial Neglect

Spatial Neglect

November 27, 2020 Conditions of Eyes and Vision No Comments

The word spatial implies something related to space. Patients with spatial neglect seem not to perceive what they may see in a certain space. It usually affects one side of visual field, left or right. In a patient with left hemi-spatial neglect, if images are simultaneously presented in both right and left fields, images in left visual field are neglected. In a worse case situation, a patient may neglect one half of his own body.

Where is the problem in hemispatial neglect?

This happens from injury to the parietal area of brain, more so with right parietal injury than left.

What may be the cause of injury to parietal lobe causing hemispatial neglect?

Usual causes are stroke, trauma, cancer, or degeneration of neurons.

What is the treatment for spatial neglect?

There is no known treatment, other than treatment of the cause.

Where can I get more information about spatial neglect?
